Endings

Henry's part of the game's ending presents him in a good or bad light depending on if he married. I find this all too fitting for Henry, because I feel like his relationships make him better. His Supports with others show the best parts of Henry. He's his best when he has someone to care about, and has someone to care about him.

I guess we should look at Henry alone first. If you complete the game without acquiring an S-Rank Support for Henry, you will get the following ending:

After Grima's demise, Henry made a cold, clean break with history, never to stain its pages again.

It's a really sad ending. 'Cold' and 'stain' are such foul words, and they mirror how I think Henry feels about himself. I think his abandonment issues and the pain he went through as a child make him feel unwanted. He has an upbeat persona, and is constantly smiling, but I really believe his smile is fake, leaving a sad, cold, individual underneath. This ending presents him as that.

If you obtain an S-Rank Support for Henry, you will get one of a variety of endings, based on who his wife is. All of them have one sentence in common:

Henry settled down with (female character) and turned out to be a surprisingly good father.

This is clearly a much better ending, and presents a warmer side of Henry that we see in several of his Supports. Many of the female characters attempt to pull the more human parts of Henry out of him. With this ending, we see that they succeeded. I think deep down, Henry is a caring, loving person. He just has a unique way of showing it.

Most of the S-Rank endings talk more about the female Henry married. Henry's ending with Sully, for example, talks about how Sully trained their daughter, Kjelle, in the art of war. Some provide a look at their unique relationship with Henry, however. My favorites are below:

Henry and Lissa - Henry settled down with Lissa and turned out to be a surprisingly good father. Their newborn son, however, developed a notably bizarre personality, in no small part because of his colorful parents.
Henry and Nowi - Henry settled down with Nowi and turned out to be a surprisingly good father. However, their daughter had to grow up faster than most other girls since her parents showed no sign of doing it.
Henry and Tharja - Henry settled down with Tharja and turned out to be a surprisingly good father. Their newborn daughter's mood was said to shift violently, perhaps due to having two dark mages as parents.
Henry and Olivia - Henry settled down with Olivia and turned out to be a surprisingly good father. Their newborn son inherited both his father's grin and his mother's undying love for entertaining others.
