The Sixth Fantasy

Long ago, the War of the Magi reduced the world to a scorched wasteland, and magic simply ceased to exist. 1000 years have passed. Iron, gunpowder, and steam engines have been rediscovered, and high technology reigns. But there are some who would enslave the world by reviving the dread destructive force known as "magic." Can it be that those in power are on the verge of repeating a senseless and deadly mistake?
- Opening Prologue

Final Fantasy VI is one of the most highly regarded entries in the long-running Final Fantasy series of role-playing video games. The website IGN has called it the #1 RPG of all time. Since this was only the third FF title to be released in North America up to 1994, it was named Final Fantasy III and available for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. (SNES) The game was re-released on the PlayStation as part of Final Fantasy Anthology in 1999 (with added 3D cutscenes), and on the Game Boy Advance as Final Fantasy VI in 2006, with a newly-translated script and more dungeons. In 2014, the game became mobile, available on Android and iOS devices. This release is very similar to the GBA version but with improved 2D graphics including redrawn environments and sprites.

Though not as popular as some of the later FF titles (or its massive successor, Final Fantasy VII), FFVI stands the test of time. It boasts detailed graphics, evocative music, an epic storyline and fully-developed characters. All this was remarkable in the SNES era, and the game remains a favorite to old and new players alike.

Professional reviews have nothing but positive things to say. AllGame calls FFVI "a classic game in every sense of the word. It combines all the ingredients that make a game a masterpiece." IGN says the title is "the one that set a standard for which all future role-playing games are judged." GameSpot says, "It was an amazing achievement when it was originally released, and it's just as impressive today."

There is no single "hero" in FFVI, although Terra Branford, a mysterious young girl, stands at the story's center. Those who join her have suffered as the influence of the Gestahlian Empire has grown. The puppet Emperor Gestahl is controlled by the insane General Kefka. The Returners, a resistance group, include over 12 playable characters. Indeed, Cyan Garamonde is part of a world of memorable people and places, one that enchants all who enter.
