Casting Call

Final Fantasy VI - The Movie ...? With Advent Children, a motion picture sequel to the seventh game, having been a huge hit with fans, such things aren't entirely out to lunch. It's fun to engage in "fantasy casting" for Cyan. There are a few possibilities.

Gerard Bulter: Let's face it, the man can do "burly warrior" like no other. Best known as King Leonidas in 300, the Scottish actor also appears ready for action in Beowulf & Grendel, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life and Reign of Fire. Though shy of Cyan's age by a few years (in his 40s, rather than 50), Butler has sufficient gravitas for an older character, plus dark features and a chistled jaw. He could also give Cyan his comic touch, since Bulter has branched out to comedies like The Ugly Truth. An obvious pick, but a solid one.

Ken Watanabe: Let's say Cyan were to be cast as Japanese - which he strongly appears to be. Who better to choose than the Last Samurai himself? Familiar to North American audiences from Batman Begins and Memoirs of a Geisha, Watanabe also starred in Clint Eastwood's Letters from Iwo Jima. In this film, he shows a wide emotional range, as well as survival skills on a 20th century battlefield. In The Last Samurai, he plays Lord Katsumoto Moritsu, an honourable warrior whose values may be out of date in rapidly-modernizing, 19th century Japan. Watanabe, mid-50s, has also played many samurai characters in Japanese films. With an affinity for tragic heroes, Watanabe fits Cyan to a T.

Gary Oldman: For emphasizing Cyan's "sensitive old guy" aspects, English actor Gary Oldman would be a wise choice. Known in past decades for playing villains as well as real-life figures, Oldman is characterized as disappearing into his roles. Notable films of his include Sid & Nancy, JFK, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Immortal Beloved and The Fifth Element. Younger movie-goers will know him best in two "mentor" roles, as Sirius Black in the Harry Potter franchise and as James Gordon in Christopher Nolan's Batman films. These two characters most suggest Oldman as Cyan, especially Sirius Black with his long hair and moustache. He would ably take on a mentor role for Sabin and Gau, in addition to conveying Cyan's sense of loss and confusion. Oldman too is the proper age, mid-50s.
